San Xavier del Bac Mission

San Xavier del Bac was photographed in Tucson, Arizona, on the Tohono O’odham Nation San Xavier Indian Reservation. The mission was rebuilt between 1783 and 1797 and is considered the oldest European structure in Arizona, but what first drew me to this view was the contrast in the scene itself. I loved the way the curved white chapel rises above the long, textured wall — soft arches against a rough rectangular surface, bright sunlight against shadow. The wall creates a physical divide from the chapel, but it also makes the photograph more interesting: a quiet separation between texture and form, what is visible and what remains just out of reach.
