A photograph, an exhibition, and a shared purpose

I'm not quite sure where the summer went. It seems like I was just writing my last Photo Note in July, and suddenly here we are in October. Fall is my favorite time of year, and after another long, hot North Texas summer, I'm more than ready for it.

Speaking of cooler weather, I have a little news to share that takes me back to a particularly cold January day in New York.

My photograph Bowery Platform, made during that January visit, has been selected for Art With Impact, a juried exhibition at the ArtCentre of Plano. I'm delighted to be included alongside 48 other Texas artists whose work spans painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, fiber, wood, metal, and more. It's quite a mix of creative perspectives, all brought together under one roof.

Bowery Platform (2026). Photographed in New York City on a cold January day, and now part of Art With Impact at the ArtCentre of Plano.

But there's something else about this exhibition that makes it especially meaningful.

One of the things that makes Art With Impact special is that every piece in the exhibition has the opportunity to find a new home. When that happens, the proceeds are shared equally between the artist and the ArtCentre. It's a simple idea that supports the people creating the work and the organization bringing it to the community.

My connection to the ArtCentre goes back several years. I've served on its board, including two years as board president, and continue today as a director. That experience has given me a real appreciation for what a community arts organization can mean to a city. It's about much more than hanging artwork on gallery walls. It's about creating opportunities, encouraging creativity, and giving people a place to experience something they might not otherwise encounter.

And that brings me to something else I hope this exhibition encourages: simply enjoying the experience of looking at art, and perhaps even taking a piece home.

You don't have to think of yourself as an art collector to enjoy having original artwork in your home. Sometimes something simply catches your eye. Maybe it's the subject, the colors, or something you can't quite explain. You just know you'd enjoy seeing it every day. And there's something especially nice about knowing it was created by an artist here in Texas, someone whose work you might never have discovered otherwise.

If you're in the Plano area and would enjoy a little company while exploring the exhibition, I'd be happy to meet you at the ArtCentre and walk through the galleries together. No special knowledge of art required, and no expectations, just an opportunity to look around, talk about what catches our attention, and enjoy the work.

I'm grateful to have Bowery Platform included in the show, and I hope you'll find a little time to explore the work of all 49 participating artists, whether online or in person.
